My Little Cupcake

“My Little Cupcake” was inspired by a photo that I took at our family farm in South Africa. I baked cupcakes for the worker’s children. Through all the laughter this little girl had a sense of sadness about her. I wanted to capture this is my art

I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait. For the background, I wanted to use a very bright colour to brighten up the mood of the little girl, and something that seems to brighten up a lot of peoples mood is shopping. Thanks to my mother’s shopping trip to Ted Baker I received one of their large green and purple shopping bags. I wanted to create the effect of a kaleidoscope with the two different colours that are captured to represent movement and makes you wonder what shape will be taken next if we were to rotate the cells to change the kaleidoscope.

Blue Eyed Boy

“Blue Eyed Boy” was inspired by a photograph I took while enjoying lunch at a restaurant in Old Havana. There were a few children in the plaza playing and running around after school. Through all the laughter there was a little boy that caught my eye. He seemed to be very deep in thought, and I wanted to capture that in my art.

I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait and for contrast in the background I used a variety of different recycled materials to represent a cloud. The blue and white are the shades for the clouds, and represent the boy with his head in those clouds.

The Apple of My Eye

“The Apple of My Eye” was inspired by a photograph I took in 2009 of a friend’s daughters. The girl, Chanè was eating a toffee apple and had the most beautiful big eyes that just captivates you, and I wanted to capture that in my art.

I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait and for contrast in the background I used recycled Nespresso capsules and Softi candy wrappers. The recycled materials were cut and arranged to form a pattern in an array of different colours. I want people to admire the beauty of the piece and to see waste in another light as waste should not be wasted but can be turned into something beautiful.

Reuse, Recycle, Rehumanize

“Reuse, Recycle, Rehumanize” was inspired by a photo I took a few years back in South Africa. She looked so peaceful, calm, and at that moment it seemed like all her troubles lifted from her shoulders, and she could reach for the stars. I wanted to capture that moment in my art too, and encourage other women to also reach for the stars.

I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait and for contrast in the background I used recycled Nespresso capsules and Softi candy wrappers. The recycled items are arranged to create a colourful pattern that adds to the beauty and vibrancy of the woman. The title of the piece is my way of asking people to think about what they are doing and instead of throwing things away and writing people off why not “Reuse, Recycle, and Rehumanize” wherever possible and do something you are proud off.
