Fresh From The Market

Fresh From The Market was inspired by a photograph I took while walking, the streets of Old Havana. After spending a few days in Havana and experiencing how difficult it is to find different produce daily, I had so much appreciation for all the work that goes into preparing a meal, and I wanted to capture that in my art.

I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait and for contrast in the background I used recycled candy wrappers in different colours. The shapes in the background represent that of the leaves of the lettuce.

SUP Clean Up

SUP Clean Up was inspired by the wonderful work that SUP Clean Up does to try and keep our oceans cleaner by collecting waste while on their paddle boards.

I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait and for contrast in the background I used pieces of old paddle boards, recycled soda cans, candy wrappers, plastic flowers, plastic bags, nets, water bottles. Most of these items would be items that they find floating in the ocean. With this piece, I wanted to bring awareness of all the different materials that are found in the ocean and that all of them get in the ocean not by chance but by people placing it there one way or another.

Divide

Divide was inspired by the British singer, songwriter, guitarist, and record producer, Ed Sheeran and him meeting his childhood art hero, David Hockney.

I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait and for contrast in the background I used recycled paper and Nespresso capsules. The design in the background is inspired by Sheeran’s album, “Divide”, with the use of the blue tones.

The Rock of the Noahtion

The Rock of the Noahtion was inspired by the South African Comedian and host of the Daily Show, Trevor Noah. After reading Trevor’s book, “Born a Crime” I was so touched by the beautiful relationship that he has with his mother,

and how she raised him as a single mother to the humble person he is today and I  wanted to capture that in my art.

I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait and for contrast in the background I used recycled soda cans and Nespresso capsules. The design in the background is inspired by a Xhosa tribal pattern to represent that of Trevor’s Xhosa heritage.

It’s All About The Journey

It’s All About The Journey was inspired by a photograph I took of my husband while walking, the streets of Old Havana. This is one of my favourite photos, as I feel this photo makes you want to jump in and enjoy the journey with him.

I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait and for contrast in the background I used old Patagonia catalogues. The background depicts the world map, and with this, I wanted to illustrate that travelling is not always about the destination “It’s All About The Journey”. The silver border around the map symbolizes that every journey you take has a silver lining and that journey does not always have to be a new destination but could be a personal journey as well.

Family Will Always Fit In Any Heart Puzzle

Family Will Always Fit In Any Heart Puzzle was inspired by Virgin Radio’s DJ Kris Fade and the beautiful relationship that he has with his two daughters. As a single father, I feel that he is doing an excellent job raising two little princesses and wanted to capture that in my art.

I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait and for contrast in the background I used recycled Koita milk boxes as the girls just love their Koita milk. The boxes are cut to create a puzzle, and through this puzzle, I wanted to illustrate that “Family Will Always Fit In Any Heart Puzzle” Above I have written the word family in Arabic to represent Kris Fade’s Lebanese heritage.

Somewhere Over The Rainbow

Somewhere Over The Rainbow is inspired by a photograph I took of a friend while laughing and I wanted to capture the moment of this happiness in my art.

I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait. The background is inspired by the song “Somewhere over the rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole and depicts a rainbow by using bright coloured recycled materials.

Trumpeting at the Fair

Trumpeting at the Fair was inspired by a photograph I took in Franschhoek during one of the  Cape Minstrel’s parades through the main street. The entire vibe was a wonderful experience, and this particular man playing his trumpet was full of passion, and I wanted to capture the moment of this happiness in my art.

I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait. The background is inspired by sound waves that is created by using recycled items.

Let’s Play

Lets Play was inspired by a photograph I took while travelling in Havana, Cuba. There were a few children in the plaza playing and running around after school. Through all the laughter there was a little girl that caught my eye. She was playing hide and seek with her friends in the streets. This reminded me of my childhood and playing games with my sister and cousins growing up.

I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait and for contrast in the background I used a variety of different recycled materials to represent a hop scots game with the text “Let’s play”.

My Boy

My Boy was created as part of the live painting session for the UAE National day celebrations. The portrait was inspired by a photograph I took in South Africa of our security guard son. He was walking alongside his father holding his hand very tightly. His father looked so proud of his son as to say to the world, this is “My Boy”. The father for me represents a pride that so many residents of UAE have towards this beautiful country we are honoured to call our home.

I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait and for contrast in the background I used different coloured recycled Nespresso capsules, shoe boxes, milk boxes and cereal boxes. The recycled materials are in the four colours of the UAE national flag.
