"Blood is Thicker than Water” was inspired by a photograph I took on a camping trip in Mozambique. We visited a small local village store that stocked a few basic items. As we arrived there were a few children playing around. Looking out for each other and staying close to one another. You could see the love that they all shared and the bond that they have. I wanted to capture that bond and show that “Blood is Thicker than Water”. I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait. The background represents water and is created by using recycled water bottle caps and wrappers that add to the theme of the painting, that "Blood is Thicker than Water".

“Blue Eyed Boy” was inspired by a photograph I took while enjoying lunch at a restaurant in Old Havana. Old Havana was buzzing with noises of laughter. Children were making their way home after school and you could hear some of them running around, others laughing out loud. There were groups of children playing in the square. No signs of iPad or mobile phones in their hands, a sight we do not see very often. Through all the laughter and children playing, there was a boy that caught my eye. He was very deep in thought and made me wonder what could he be thinking of or did he have his head in the clouds? The portrait is painted in a monochrome colour scheme with acrylic paint in different thicknesses to give a more realistic feel. The background is created in my trash to treasure style, to form a cloud like illusion in white and blue shades.

“Fresh From The Market” was inspired by a photograph I took while roaming, the streets of Old Havana. After spending a few days in Havana and experiencing how difficult it is to find different produce daily, I had so much more appreciation for all the work that went into preparing a meal. The portrait is painted in a monochrome colour scheme with acrylic paint in different thicknesses to give a more realistic feel. The background is created in my trash to treasure style, by using torn pieces of candy wrappers in four colours. The candy wrappers become a symbol of all the different elements it takes to create a meal and that sometimes things might seem out of place on it’s own, but when joined together it can create something beautiful. The shape used in the background is to mimic that of the lettuce leaves, that the woman is holding in her hand.

This painting is part of the series titled “I Am Her.” In this series, I create art pieces of inspirational woman from all walks of life. I photograph each of the women from four sides. Depicting a 360-degree view of the specific woman to look deeper and get a better understanding of the particular woman. I want people to look at these women and see little bits of themselves in them and that they would be able to say, "I Am Her". The second woman in the series is Dolores, a Jordanian/Serbian adventurer and the first Jordanian, second Serbian Woman and the first Arab Woman to summit Mount Everest from the North side. For me, she represents so many women all around the world that have been told that they cannot achieve something and through hard work, she is showing us that if you have a dream, you need to chase it. I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait and for contrast in the background I used plastic bags that I melt. The recycled bags are arranged to represent Everest.

"In Daddy’s Arms, All Is Safe” was inspired by a photograph I took while roaming the streets of Old Havana, Cuba. The schools have just ended for the day, and children were playing and running around in the plaza. Amongst all the laughter of the children, I spotted this little girl being carried, and she looked like she had not a care in the world as "In Daddy's Arms, All Is Safe." I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait of the father and daughter. For the background, I used recycled milk, cereal, and pasta boxes along with my canvas packaging. The recycled materials were cut and arranged to form a pattern in an array of different colours with the milk boxes adding an extra bit of shine with the foil side visible.

“It’s All About The Journey” was inspired by a photograph I took of my husband while roaming, the streets of Old Havana. This is one of my favourite photos, as I feel this photo makes you want to jump in and enjoy the journey with him.
I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait and for contrast in the background I used old Patagonia catalogues. The background depicts the world map, and with this, I wanted to illustrate that travelling is not always about the destination "It's All About The Journey".
The silver border around the map symbolizes that every journey you take has a silver lining and that journey does not always have to be a new destination but could be a personal journey as well.

"Lets Play", was inspired by a photograph I took while sitting at a restaurant in Old Havana. Old Havana was buzzing with noises of laughter. Children were making their way home after school and you could hear some of them running around, others laughing out loud.
Through all the laughter there was a little girl that caught my eye. She was playing hide and seek with her friends in the streets. This reminded me of my childhood and playing games with my sister and cousins growing up. A sight that we don’t see that often today as a lot of children seem to be glued to a device rather than playing outside.
I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait and for contrast in the background I used a variety of different recycled materials to represent a hop scots game with the text "Let's play".

“Marching On” was inspired by a photograph I took at the Acropolis of Athens. It was the changing of the guard, and I captured the moment where the one guard just ended his shift. He had a sense of calmness about him, but you could also see that he had great pride in what he was doing and I wanted to capture that moment.
The background is created by upcycled ginger ale cans, representing a military presence with the colour. The cans are cut in triangular shapes and pieced together to cover the background. The triangular shapes represent the corners of stars and the military ranking that comes with it.

“Milibangalala Menina” was inspired by a photograph I took on a camping trip in Mozambique. We visited a small local village store that stocked a few basic items. As we arrived there were a few children playing around. This little girl came to me and wanted me to pick her up, with her arms stretched out. I picked her up and although we did not speak the same language it was easy to feel the love that all of these children shared for one another. The background is created out of a variety of different materials (chocolate wrappers, milk boxes, pasta boxes, Ziplock bag boxes and gorilla cereal). I wanted to add the playfulness that the young children had and created a game within the painting for people to spot the animals hidden in the background. The title of the painting is referring to the area in Mozambique where we were, Milibangalala and the word Menina is Portuguese for girl.

“My Boy” was created as part of the live painting session for the UAE National day celebrations. The portrait was inspired by a photograph I took in South Africa. The boy was walking alongside his father holding his hand very tightly.
His father looked so proud of his son as to say to the world, this is “My Boy”. The father for me represents pride that so many residents of UAE have towards this beautiful country we are honoured to call our home.
The background, represents the colours of the UAE national flag and created using a variety of different materials (single-use aluminium coffee capsules, shoe boxes, milk boxes and cereal boxes).

"My Little Cupcake” was inspired by a photo that I took. I baked cupcakes for the children and we had a large table set up with all the treats.
Through all the laughter and excitement of the treats, this little girl stood out as she had a sense of sadness about her and tears in her eyes and the next moment there was a smile that appeared.
I wanted to capture this is my art I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait. For the background, I used bright colours from a Ted Baker shopping bag to brighten up the mood of the little girl. The bag was cut into triangular shapes to form a kaleidoscope with two different colours. The colours represent movement and make you wonder what shape will be taken next if we were to rotate the cells to change the kaleidoscope. Becoming a symbol of what happens to us after the sadness and that the only thing that is constant is change. We might feel sad in one moment but that too shall pass.

“Reuse, Recycle, Rehumanize” was inspired by a photo I took a few years back in South Africa. She looked so peaceful, calm, and at that moment it seemed like all her troubles lifted from her shoulders, and she could reach for the stars. I wanted to capture that moment in my art too, and encourage other women to also reach for the stars.
I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait and for contrast in the background I used recycled Nespresso capsules and Softi candy wrappers. The recycled items are arranged to create a colourful pattern that adds to the beauty and vibrancy of the woman. The title of the piece is my way of asking people to think about what they are doing and instead of throwing things away and writing people off why not “Reuse, Recycle, and Rehumanize” wherever possible and do something you are proud off.

“Somewhere Over The Rainbow” is inspired by the song “Somewhere over the Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole and a photograph that I took of a friend. “Oh, somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue. Clouds high over the rainbow, makes all your dreams come true” I wanted to capture that moment of happiness when you realise your dream have come true in the eyes of a smiling woman. The background adding pops of colour and a glimpse of a rainbow with the colours morphing into each other made from recycled paper and cardboard. “The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky Are also on the faces of people passing by” I wanted us to take that feeling of seeing a rainbow after a storm, feeling that your dreams might have come true and share that love and happiness. We might not see a rainbow every day, but why not see that same flicker of love and happiness in those around us as well.

"The Apple of My Eye” was inspired by a photograph I took in 2009 of a friend's daughters. The girl, Chanè was eating a toffee apple and had the most beautiful big eyes that just captivates you, and I wanted to capture that in my art.
I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait and for contrast in the background I used recycled Nespresso capsules and Softi candy wrappers. The recycled materials were cut and arranged to form a pattern in an array of different colours. I want people to admire the beauty of the piece and to see waste in another light as waste should not be wasted but can be turned into something beautiful.

“The Woman Behind The Hat” was inspired by a photograph I took at the floating market in Bangkok. We were ‘floating’ by a variety of different stores while in our boat. One of them had a beautiful Thai lady selling hats. There was just something about her smile that captivates you as you float on by. I wanted to capture the moment with her smile in my art.
I used acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait and for contrast in the background I used recycled Softi candy wrappers. I wanted the background to represent the hustle and bustle of the market and added roses made from the wrappers on the one hat to compliment the beauty of this woman’s smile.

“Trumpeting at the Fair” was inspired by a photograph I took in Franschhoek main road during one of the Cape Minstrel's parades. The entire vibe was a wonderful experience, and this particular man playing his trumpet was full of passion, and I wanted to capture the moment of this happiness in my art.
I sed acrylic paint with a monochrome colour scheme for the portrait. The background is inspired by sound waves that are created by using milk boxes and paper scraps.
